On Thursday the 8th of June, the entire Tech Lab and Beyond Banking team arrived at Sugar City to find a level of activity quite similar to that of an ant colony. The very industrial and somewhat dilapidated interior of the old factory was being transformed to accommodate a hackathon and event of daunting proportions in mere hours. Impressive and humbling at the same time. The tension was tangible.
After a long time preparing for something that was new to most of us, the anticipation rose. Would it be the success the numbers of registrations indicated? Did we do the right things to create the kick-ass experience we desperately wanted to achieve? To get the best results possible? To kick off the Beyond banking movement we crave?
In hindsight, we neednt have worried. Like in a fairy-tale, Sugar City was a place of dreams for a period of three whole days!
With a Tech Alley to give a warm welcome to our visitors, we started our first day. Various sponsors and our Technology Lab showed different innovations in technology in the stands. Robots and visitors interacted, the Hololens gave a glimpse of what tomorrows world could look like and guests even got the chance to try some new Teslas out.
After inspiring talks from Jason Bates & Flor Avelino and live on stage discussions, workshops on the subjects Open Banking, Future of Technology, Intrapreneurship, Design Thinking led by experts like Sean Carney (Chief Design Officer at Philips) and Banking Innovation with ABN AMRO, offered the more than 600 external and ABN AMRO visitors the chance to contemplate the future of banking further.
207 hackers get cracking
No less than 100 ideas were pre-registered by teams on our Beyond Banking Days site, teams with an amazing variation in background and interest. The selected 41 teams, invited to create their idea in our Hackathon, really proved that they could go Beyond Banking by combining our ABN AMRO and partner APIs to create intelligent and resourceful solutions.
ABN AMRO offered the Accounts, Payments, Batch Payments, IBAN Validity, Tikkie and Gradefix APIs. The APIs were called a total of 95.341 times, which amounted to a peak at the event of 5,11 calls per second. The hackers also had the APIs of 12 partners at their disposal. It was an amazing feeling to watch the process at all the different team tables take place. To see the activity, determination and stamina of so many terrific participants.
The quality and imagination involved in the ideas was overwhelming. The jury had a hard time deciding on the absolute best, but in the end chose Monnei as the ‘Most Valuable Prototype’ on Sunday. Monnei is an app that makes it easier to start investing by doing it as a group and by offering personalised news. There was much praise for the ‘Make an Impact’ team. They won the ‘Social Impact Award’ with their data model that improves the treatment of children with T-Cell leukemia and thus saves lives. The blockchain application ‘Material Passport’ offered the best technical ingenuity according to the professional jury. The audience award was won by LoYo, an ingenious loyalty program that does not require an extra card.
Relive and build on the movement
Were looking forward to the coming weeks where well find out which ideas will result in some awesome products and services! One thing is for sure, the challenge to question the status quo has been met by the majority of the ideas that saw the first light this weekend and provide us with more than enough substance go beyond banking at an even a higher pace than we anticipated!
So a HUGE thank you to everyone that contributed, supported or participated in any way!
(And for those that were there, youll understand me when I say that Micha Rentiers reaction to the fire during the prize announcements alone, was worth any other effort ;-))
